The AEMA Young Member Committee (YMC) is excited to give an update on the three goals that were established by the committee to complete before the 2018 AEMA/ARRA/ISSA annual meeting.  Due to hard work by all members of the YMC, significant progress has been made.  To recap, the three goals are:

1.       Establish a mentoring program

2.       Upload multiple YouTube videos on asphalt emulsion

3.       Develop a young member session for the 2018 AEMA/ARRA/ISSA annual meeting

The first goal, establishing a mentoring program, is already accepting both mentors and mentees into the mentoring program.  On the registration form for the 2018 AEMA/ARRA/ISSA annual meeting, if you are interested in becoming either a mentor or a mentee, we encourage you to check the appropriate box.  By checking this box, you are not committing, but you will receive follow-up information and a questionnaire to ensure that proper pairings of mentors and mentees are established.  After reviewing the questionnaire, if you are still interested, you will complete the questionnaire and receive a match, along with a mentoring packet to help establish the relationship.  We are looking for mentors (greater than five years’ experience) and mentees (less than ten years’ experience), so please consider joining he program!

The second goal, uploading multiple YouTube videos on asphalt emulsion is also moving along quickly.  Three videos will be uploaded: “Choosing the Right Asphalt Emulsion for the Job”, “Asphalt Emulsions 101”, and the “Do’s and Don’ts of Asphalt Emulsion.”  These ~5 minute videos are intended to drive traffic to AEMA’s website and additional resources that are offered on the website.

The third goal, developing a young member session for the 2018 AEMA/ARRA/ISSA annual meeting, is also almost complete!  During the lunch break on Wednesday, February 21, we look forward to former AEMA president Archie Reynolds giving a talk on leadership through the lens of the asphalt emulsion industry, and Ivann Harnish (a YMC member) giving a presentation on a typical day in the life of an asphalt emulsion chemist.  These presentations are intended to help other young member (or seasoned members!) learn a bit more about our industry and explore areas that they may not encounter on a regular basis.

Over the past nine months, the YMC has been making great strides toward achieving our core mission “to develop younger members to be future leaders of AEMA.”  We appreciate all of the help from the AEMA board and other members as we move forward, and hope that all members enjoy some of the benefits from the YMC work.
