AEMA President's Message - December 2018

Thursday, December 20, 2018

Season’s Greetings,

As this Holiday Season approaches, we can close the books on a year that challenged AEMA membership with record breaking inclement weather, fierce natural disasters and unsettled economics. There is little doubt it has been a tough one for most of our members but as it is largely behind us, we now look forward to laying the groundwork for what we all expect to be a highly successful 2019 construction and maintenance season. There will be a significant backlog of work to be completed early in the upcoming year and there is much to do in the way of preparing for it; cultivating relationships, product promotion, plant maintenance and repair, employee training, planning, forecasting, efficiency reviews, raw material evaluation and so much more. There is one constant in that the better we prepare, the better we perform.

Just as you go about planning for the success of your business, AEMA is planning for the continued success of our association. The synergy leadership team, which includes our counterparts from ARRA and ISSA, met in early December to begin fleshing out concepts and ideas for improvements to and marketing of the highly successful website, RoadResource.org. The site was launched to the public in July and to date thousands of viewers have availed themselves of the information, features and tools provided by the sister associations’ efforts which were marshalled through PPRA. The collected and analyzed metrics verify a few things about this joint effort:

  • The perceived need for this information, presented in this format, was real
  • Our customers and potential customers are not just visiting but using the site
  • The investment of your hard-earned dollars will generate a high rate of return into the future
  • The creation and design of the website through Vario Consulting was very well done
  • There is more work to be done and more opportunity to be realized
  • The combined effort of the three associations is far more than just  “ 3 x ”

There are a couple of webinars in the works that are intended to keep members informed about the website. They will help our members learn how to better use the site and how to leverage the site with their local customer base. There is a “Super User” program in the planning stages that could amplify a member’s voice across their region as an expert proponent of preservation and recycling. Stay tuned for more detailed information as these products become reality.

There are many ongoing activities that contribute to the value of your membership to AEMA. The very best way to catch up and to participate is to attend the annual meeting and we look forward to seeing everyone in Cancun in February for the 46th AEMA Annual Meeting and the 16th consecutive annual meeting held in conjunction with our sister associations ARRA and ISSA. The planning committee along with our management team has done a great job of putting this event together. Thanks to that hard working group we are building towards a great occasion where we can both learn from the knowledge and experience of experts while networking with others in our industry. The meeting registration package provides an all-inclusive resort environment with pre-arranged, safe transportation to and from the airport and local event opportunities for spouses. Importantly, there are no registration fees for spouses this year. Having more spouses attend this meeting is a great goal as it takes us back to our roots and facilitates forming stronger bonds between members.  One highlight of many at the meeting is the awards dinner where, along with other accolades, we will recognize the first recipients of the AEMA Excellence in Manufacturing Award, a program that is sure to be a big part of AEMA’s future as we work to highlight and differentiate our members while encouraging others to join our association.

On a personal note I want to thank the AEMA membership for allowing me the honor of serving as president over the last two years. I leaned heavily on your board of directors, various committees, and past, current, and future leadership and the experience was truly rewarding in more ways than I can express. Our management team at CM Services is focused and performing at a high level and the board is fully stocked with a diversity of talent and experience, with all having the passion required to move our association forward. The future is indeed bright and your association is in good hands. Please consider joining one or more of the many committees that provide the structure and work product of AEMA. Perhaps you have someone on your team that you would like to serve at the board level, or an employee that would benefit from the mentoring program that is going into its second year. However you would like to participate, we welcome you. You’ve heard this before, and I can attest to the accuracy, you will get more out of it than you put into it.

Thank you for your membership and very best wishes for a safe and meaningful Holiday Season,

Mark Ishee
