Several members of the LEAP cohort met in Albany, New York on August 30th for a visit with Gorman Asphalt. The group was hosted by Charlotte Gorman and included a job site visit, lab tour, and plant tours. The job site visit included a single CIR train using pneumatic and steel wheel rollers to help repair surface cracking. This was constructed with three-passes through a residential neighborhood. The second stop showcased the Gorman Group’s newly renovated research and testing lab with focus on binder, mix, roofing and latex materials testing. At the same stop, a tour was given of the Gorman Port of Rensselaer asphalt terminal. This terminal has rail and port access for shipping AC of different grades, as well as polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) production capabilities. The third visit of the day was a tour of the Mohawk Asphalt Emulsions plant in Scotia, New York where a variety of asphalt emulsions are produced and tested.
Midwest Pavement Preservation Partnership (MWPPP) Meeting – September 13-15: St. Louis, MO
Agency, academia, and industry representatives from the Midwest Region came together in St. Louis, Missouri for the annual MWPPP meeting. Several of the LEAP cohort based out of the Midwest were able to attend to hear agencies at the city, county, and state levels give their strategies and perspectives on the usage of preservation treatments within their networks. They explained their balance of budgeting, timing, products used, and education to gain the most value out of their pavements. In addition to the agencies, the MWPPP breakout sessions were able to discuss the research needs for the preservation industry. Crafco also put on a hot polymer concrete patching demonstration on Wednesday afternoon. The meeting finished out Thursday afternoon with an ISSA micro surfacing training session.
