LEAP Connection: Ingevity
Monday, February 6, 2023
The Inaugural LEAP Class wrapped up our final tour in November with Ingevity, headquartered in North Charleston, South Carolina. Our visit began at the Ingevity Headquarters with a great presentation from Dave Welborn, Director, Pavement Preservation Technical Service and Stephanie Morris, Manager, Strategic Initiatives. They led us through the history of the Ingevity of today starting with Mead in 1846. Ingevity has 2000 employees spread over 31 locations worldwide, including 7 technical centers and 14 manufacturing sites. We discussed the process of “using every part of the tree except the shade.” | | | Next up was a tour of the Pavement Technologies labs at Ingevity’s Technical Center. The row of labs “branch” off the chemical synthesis lab in the center with the Mix Performance labs on one side and Hot and Cold mix testing labs on the other. Following being fed mentally and physically, we headed to the N. Charleston Refinery and Plant. The N. Charleston facilities have 3 on-site reactors capable of 90k and 45k batch sizes and provide 140 products to the asphalt industry worldwide! Apart from the technology and process, the plant logistics were amazing. Many of us were shocked to find that the vast majority of their products are made to order with less than 5 in their line having dedicated tank storage. The As we approach the AEMA-ARRA-ISSA Annual General Meeting, it’s almost serendipitous that the last 2022-2023 LEAP Tour stop was at the facility of one of AEMA’s founding members (as MeadWestvaco) and accompanied by current AEMA President, Bob Huitt. The Inaugural LEAP Class Year ends at the meeting in Arizona. There will be a pool of eager individuals ready to continue their involvement in AEMA so don’t be stranger!
