Friday, June 2, 2023
On April 11th 2023, The LEAP class including 14 participants and AEMA president Dan Koeninger toured the Marathon Refinery in Garyville, LA. The LEAP participants met in New Orleans for networking events and traveled a short distance to the Garyville refinery. In addition to the refinery tour, the group had an opportunity to go on a New Orleans steamboat tour and experience the French Quarter and Bourbon Street. The group was grateful for our tour hosts including Stormy Brewster, Robert Atkinson, Mitchell Stokan, and Lora Collins. After a comprehensive safety overview, the LEAP class was introduced to the refinery operations at the plant. The initial presentation, given by Robert and Mitchell, was very informative and interactive including the basics of the refining process and facility operations. The Garyville refinery is the 2nd largest facility in the US processing approximately 585,000 barrels of crude per day. Built in 1973, this facility was the last refinery built in the US. Some capabilities of the refinery include: crude units, fluid catalytic cracker, hydrocracker, distillate and naphtha hydrotreaters, HF alkylation unit, reformers, saturate gas plants, and cokers. | |
| Marathon is currently the largest US asphalt producer, supplying approximately 25% of the asphalt in the US market.Once the presentation portion of the tour was completed, the group loaded up on a bus for an in-depth tour of the refinery. In addition to touring the entire facility, the group was also able to spend some time in the refinery control center and the shipping docks. Interestingly, the control center processes 130,000 pieces of data in real time around the clock and was built to withstand a category 3 hurricane. | | The refinery has 5 docks and ships their asphalt via trucks, railcars and barge.Marathon has spent over 130 years in the energy business and continues to support the growth and education of the next generation of leaders through their commitment to industry involvement. The LEAP group is grateful for their time and efforts in organizing this facility tour, and a special thanks for the support from AEMA and its board members. | | LEAP Update Provided By: Nate Jenkins, Bobby Behrens, Shafer Soars and Charles Taylor |
