LEAP visits US Aggregates Quarry, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Heritage Research Group
|
|
In June, the LEAP Class took a tour of the US Aggregates Quarry in Delphi, Indiana. Ross Larimore, Sales Manager and Putter Hahn, Plant Manager gave an informative tour
of the limestone quarry. We even got up close and personal with the giant loader and dump truck.

A tour near Indianapolis called for a stop at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Bill Pine, Quality Control Director for Heritage Research Group, provided our group with his valuable knowledge of the track.
He talked about the paving history of the track and the maintenance required for the track’s surface.
We took a lap around the track in a shuttle bus and stopped at the Yard of Bricks where we got to “Kiss the Bricks”
|
| Our tour was complete after visiting Heritage Research Group (HRG) and The Center. Jay Miller, Director of Pavement Engineering, and Meghan McLeod, Group Lead-Analytical Research, showed us all the technology and research areas that HRG has to offer.
We had a great tour of The Heritage Group’s state of the art facility.
Thank you to everyone that made this tour possible!

Cenovus Energy Tour
|
|
On July 9, 2024, members of the 2024 LEAP class visited the Cenovus Energy asphalt refinery in Lloydminster, Alberta. Cenovus assets made it the second-largest Canadian-based refiner.
Established in 1947, the Lloydminster facility is the largest paving asphalt producer in Western Canada. It produces more than 30 types of paving products from Canadian heavy oil. These products range from road oils used for dust control
to paving-grade asphalts. Products are shipped into and out of the facility via a robust railcar system and trucks.

The tour was given by Drew Lake, the refinery’s offsites, polymer-modified asphalt (PMA), and Rail specialist. After a great presentation and discussion about the refinery work capacity and infrastructure, the 2024 LEAP
class geared up with personal protective equipment (PPE) and set out on a walking tour. On the tour, we observed the refining process equipment including the several remote-control rooms for towers, tanks, pumps,
transfer pipes, and loading sites. We also had the opportunity to visit the PMA production plant. The facility's remarkable size, organization, and rigorous safety procedures made it clear how much work and care goes in handling the
millions of cubic meters of crude and asphalt shipments annually.

In addition to the refinery tour, the group enjoyed the Saskatoon Jazz Festival in style. We had access to a Cenovus VIP tent that provided shade and an amazing view of the stage. This was the first time in Canada for many of the LEAP program attendees, the refinery tour and the international music festival served as an excellent way to introduce them to the Canadian work environment, as well as food, music, and culture of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.
The LEAP group is grateful for the time and effort put into organizing the tour and festival. Special thanks are extended to AEMA and its board members for their support.
